“Long gone is the day the teacher stands up in front of the classroom and teaches it one way and then sits down while the students do their work.”

Advances in math performance were noted in the recently released Kids Count in Michigan report for 2009, which highlighted fourth- and eighth-grade state assessment math scores. It found that while more than a third of fourth-graders failed the MEAP’s math test in 2003, that number was down to 12 percent statewide by 2008. Nearly half of Michigan eighth-graders failed MEAP math in 2003, compared with one in four in 2008, according to Kids Count.

Muskegon Heights has focused on “extended learning” for students after school and during the summer as well as data analysis and ongoing professional development, said S. Ann Lars, the district’s executive director of curriculum and instruction.

“We’re really getting good at data analysis and drilling down and getting skill specific,” Lars said. “We’re doing backward and forward (curriculum) mapping and planning.”

MUSKEGON — Melvin Lars was a high school student in Louisiana in 1969 when he got his first taste of conflict mediation — a skill that he says he can still use today as the newly elected President of the Muskegon NAACP. Melvin Lars

Racial tensions were high at Lars’ high school in Bossier City, La., often boiling over into fistfights and other violence. Working with a group of white and black students, Lars did his best to break up fights and ease the tension.

The violence didn’t disappear, but Lars says his group prevented some fights from getting worse.

“We just said ‘this was insane,’” Lars said. “We had to do something about this. It was getting dangerous to everybody that was involved." Reducing a wave of violence, including several fatal shootings, that has shaken the Muskegon area this year is one of Lars' goals.

And while the recent spate of violence facing the area is different than what Lars, 57, faced as a young man, he’s confident that proven strategies such as education, teamwork, and community outreach can help reduce it.

“Everything is a challenge, however, it is part of our responsibility as adults ... to rise to that challenge and go after these young people to assist them,” Lars said. “They’re not going to come to us — we have to go to them.”

In a vote among Muskegon NAACP members, Lars beat out Rev. William Anderson, who has served as president the past two years.

When asked to describe how his leadership style differs from that of Anderson, Lars declined comment, only saying “we certainly have different philosophies.”

Lars, a retired high school principal, came to Muskegon in 2005 when his wife, Ann, landed a job as the curriculum director of Muskegon Heights High School. Prior to that, Lars served as the principal of a high school in Youngstown, Ohio, Cleveland Ohio, Woodrow Wilson High School, Youngstown, Ohio. He has also served as an assistant principal at Adrian HS, Adrian, Mich., and several high schools in Louisiana.

Lars also served as the Head Football coach/Instructor at Washington Preparatory High School under the tutelage of Principal, Dr. George McKenna of the "George McKenna" Story. Dr. McKenna's character was portrayed by Mr. Denzel Washington.
